Phoolcharoen
Pioneer in Thailand's Plant-Based Vaccines

Associate Professor Dr. Waranyoo Phoolcharoen has developed recombinant proteins in plants focusing on drugs and vaccines for infectious diseases such as Rabies, Ebola, and Hand-foot-mouth diseases. Her research has been published in many top international journals, including PNAS, Plant Biotechnology Journal, Scientific Reports, etc. She has developed a COVID-19 antibody test kit using plant-produced recombinant protein. This was used to screen people who had been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the first year of the pandemic. Moreover, her team has developed a plant-produced COVID-19 vaccine and will get into a phase 2 clinical trial in 2023. The COVID-19 vaccine development from the lab to the clinical trial will be the expertise for the team to be able to develop other drugs and vaccines in the future. The knowledge benefits drug and vaccine development in Thailand. The outstanding work deserves an award to bring from different research areas together and focus on vaccine development.
