Driven to improve healthcare for vulnerable people :
Dr. Sarawut has been key in advancing Thailand’s program for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and in developing a systematic monitoring and evaluation framework. These efforts enabled Thailand to become the second country in the world, and the first in ASEAN, to achieve the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, formally recognized by the World Health Organization in 2016. He has also contributed as a member of the International MCH Handbook Committee, supporting the development and revision of maternal and child health handbooks in Thailand and internationally. In addition, he initiated the Safe Birth for All project in collaboration with UNFPA, which expanded access to healthcare services for pregnant women among ethnic minorities and migrant populations. The initiative has helped reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and has been noted as a model for protecting the health of vulnerable groups. Moreover, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sarawut had a key role in strengthening infection prevention and control measures in schools under the Ministry of Education. His efforts helped students nationwide return to classrooms safely through the Sandbox Safety Zone in School and Bringing Students Back to School initiatives. He also championed policy changes to ensure that students who contracted COVID-19 retained their right to sit examinations and continue their studies without being left behind. In addition, He developed a lung cancer screening system using the LDCT technique for high-risk groups in Northern Thailand, to enhance access to the policy of “early detection, early treatment, lung cancer can be cured.” This initiative marked the first implementation of its kind within the Health Inspectorate Region. His contributions have had a lasting impact and provided significant benefits to society on both national and international scales
“Throughout my time studying here, I have not only received academic knowledge, but also learned what it means to be a physician who creates benefit for fellow human beings. The knowledge and experience I gained have enabled me to apply them effectively in the care and treatment of patients, particularly those in remote areas. This has made me feel deeply honored to have studied at an institution committed to addressing the health problems of humanity. Being part of the Mahidol University family is a pride that has always remained in my heart, and it is a vital driving force that inspires me to continue fulfilling my duties for the benefit of others.” Proud to be Mahidol Alumni by Dr.Sarawut Boonsuk
