New Gen for Sustainable Thai Mental Health:
K.Pootanet has observed that mental health is gaining increasing importance in Thai society. This is evident through various channels, such as the Mental Health Hotline (1323) and consultation platforms provided by both the public and private sectors. These services are not limited to individuals with mental illness but are open to anyone seeking emotional support and guidance. His journey in mental health began during his time as a student at Mahidol University, where he joined the MU Friend network, a peer support group that listens and cares for fellow students. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in mental health, eventually leading him to work at the Department of Mental Health, the main organization responsible for developing and overseeing Thailand’s mental health system. In this role, he supports executive operations to drive national mental health policies and strategies effectively. He is also frequently assigned to fieldwork to ensure that services meet the real-time needs of the public. One of the department’s key missions is the operation of the MCATT (Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team), also known as the “Psychological First Aid Team,” which provides support to individuals affected by crises such as serious accidents, natural disasters, and violent incidents. Beyond MCATT, Khun Phuthanet has contributed to other major initiatives, including advocating for the Mental Health Act, improving access to psychiatric medications, and promoting accurate public understanding of mental health to reduce stigma and foster empathy. Though his role may seem like a small cog in a large system, he takes great pride in contributing to the mental well-being of Thai people. He believes that collective efforts will lead Thai society toward lasting emotional resilience. For his dedication, he was honored with the Young Alumni Award 2023 from Mahidol University.
