Pioneer of NCD Epidemiology & Disease Prevention :
Dr. Auttakiat is a pioneer in developing epidemiological processes for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Traditionally, epidemiology was primarily grounded in the study of communicable diseases. He developed epidemiological processes and conceptual frameworks specifically for NCD management by integrating fundamental epidemiological theories with domain knowledge and mechanisms of NCDs that have distinct contextual characteristics. These include the Socio-Ecological Model, global policy directions, the Life Course Approach, the Setting Approach, health service systems, data management, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by professionals working in the field of NCDs. He actively sought partnerships to drive initiatives at both national and international levels, including the development of new concepts for event-based surveillance for NCDs. These concepts and processes were incorporated into the curriculum of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), a national institute for training physicians specializing in preventive medicine with a focus on epidemiology. In addition, he developed short-term training programs lasting six to eight months for personnel working in NCDs, including public health academics and nurses, as well as two cohorts of specialized training programs for physicians responsible for NCD management. Physicians who participated in these programs were able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills to improve the prevention and control of NCDs. Furthermore, these processes have been integrated into training programs for health system managers, enabling them to analyze and synthesize data and manage NCDs systematically. These efforts have been implemented continuously for more than ten years. He also established standards for safe running events and systems for event surveillance and investigation. These include runner risk screening, standards for event organization and medical services, and systems for event surveillance and investigation. This work was informed by the identification and compilation of data on incidents of loss of consciousness and deaths occurring during running events in various forms, collected through online media sources. The outcomes included the development of tools, manuals, and surveillance and investigation systems that have been formally recognized. These incidents were designated as high-priority health events requiring reporting under the DCIR system. The initiative generated strong momentum and demand for safe running events across multiple sectors, leading to standardized practices that have been disseminated nationwide.

“I am proud to have graduated from Mahidol University, an institution that places equal importance on academic excellence and social values. Learning alongside faculty members and peers from diverse disciplines enabled me to develop systematic, comprehensive, and rational ways of thinking, while also learning to work effectively with others and respect differences. These are fundamental foundations for my professional work today. I feel a strong bond with Mahidol as a community of individuals committed to social development through research, service, and creative work in many dimensions. Even after graduation, the institution’s values and ways of thinking remain integral to how I conduct my work with careful judgment, ethical integrity, and a commitment to producing outcomes that benefit others. I am always proud to be a Mahidol alumnus and am determined to uphold the institution’s reputation and values through my ongoing professional responsibilities.” Proud to be Mahidol Alumni by Dr. Auttakiat Karnjanapiboonwong
